BEER. WOMEN. DES MOINES.

ABOUT THE BARLEY'S ANGELS

Where Women Explore Beer

Barley's Angels–Greater Des Moines was established in 2014 by Ariane Sundean. She held the first meeting in March of that year at a brewery to gauge the interest of area women in supporting a local chapter. The response was overwhelming, with 40+ women that attended and shared their ideas for how to establish a successful and well-supported group. Immediately following the meeting, a Board of enthusiastic women was created to plan the chapter events and find accessible ways for women to learn about and enjoy craft beer. Our chapter now offers a variety of beer events about ten times a year, hosted at local beer establishments, featuring professional presenters that want to help women learn more about beer. If you are a woman of legal-drinking age that enjoys craft beer, you are a Barley's Angel!

Barley's Angels is a network of chapters by and for women exploring beer. Founded in 2011, the first chapter meeting was held at Rogue Ales Public House in Portland Oregon. Barley's Angels chapters around the world expand the appreciation and understanding of craft beer among women through events with craft beer professionals. Chapter events are places to discover how to cook with beer, tricks to pairing beer with food, what makes the beer you like taste just right, how to buy the right beer, etc. As of March 2016, Barley's Angels has grown to 111 chapters, in six countries including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Germany, UK and USA.

It is commonplace to find women professionals in the craft beer field presenting at and even founding Barley’s Angels chapters. You will find certified Cicerones, brewers, and brewpub owners among the list of Barley's Angels chapter founders. The founder of the Greater Des Moines chapter helped open a metro nano-brewery and was inspired to grow a chapter here to help educate women about this booming industry.

Barley's Angels is not just a social, beer-drinking club for women. Barley's Angels respect beer and brewing, have a thirst for education, enjoy beer responsibly and act appropriately at all times.

All chapters must:

  • Be established by a woman
  • Charge an event fee
  • Hold events for women only (exceptions made for presenters and media)

Purpose:

  • Encourage education and interest in beer among women.
  • Advance the female craft beer consumer.
  • Work with craft-beer focused breweries, brewpubs, restaurants in creating a comfortable environment for female consumers.
